MENASHE

NOVEMBER 27th – 29th

Director Joshua Z. Weinstein; Drama/Comedy; PG; United States, English/Yiddish, 2017, 1hr 21mins

Deep in the heart of New York’s notoriously secretive Hasidic Jewish community, Menashe, a good-hearted but somewhat hapless grocery store clerk, struggles against tradition to keep custody of his only son after his wife passes away.

REVIEWS:

“The film balances gentle humor with profound sadness, raising quiet questions about conformity, change, and religious tradition.”

–New York Times

“Apart from a few lines of English, and a few more in Spanish, the vast majority of the dialogue is in Yiddish, as spoken by the Orthodox Jewish community the movie depicts… Rather than suggesting that the Hasidim must adapt to Menashe, the film offers its protagonist a more realistic choice: He must either agree to conform or leave the culture to which he somewhat defiantly belongs.”
