This year, Yom Ha’atzmaut arrived during the academic calendar, creating a rare opportunity for local college students to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day together.

Hosted by Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach and supported through a grant from the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, the celebration brought together approximately 300 local college students for an evening rooted in Jewish pride, community, and connection to Israel.

The gathering carried added significance during a time when opportunities for students to visibly and openly celebrate their connection to Israel have become increasingly complex. For many attendees, the evening offered a meaningful space to come together, celebrate proudly, and share a sense of joy and belonging among peers.

“Events like this give students the support and encouragement to be enthusiastically pro-Israel and share that joy among like-minded peers,” said Jason Harris, Executive Director of Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach. “It reinforces their identity and connection to Israel in ways that feel authentic and energizing.”

The event also marked a meaningful milestone for Hillel’s community as it aligned with the final year of its Jewish Agency Israel Fellow. Having joined the team just months before October 7, her three-year shlichut unfolded during an extraordinarily challenging period for Israel and Jewish communities worldwide. Gathering together on Yom Ha’atzmaut served as an unofficial sendoff and a powerful reflection of the relationships, resilience, and community built during her time with Hillel.

At Jewish Boca, we know that creating spaces where young adults can gather proudly, safely, and meaningfully around their Jewish identity and connection to Israel matters.

This Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration was more than a holiday gathering. It was a reminder that Jewish life continues to be strengthened through community, shared identity, and enduring connection to Israel.
