Thanks to generous donations to the Annual Campaign, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is able to support The Community Shower, a hygiene program hosted by B’nai Torah Congregation. This program helps build dignity and self-respect among the unhoused members of our community.

For the past two years, B’nai Torah has provided shower kits, consisting of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel or soap, a washcloth, and a towel, to unhoused people of all ages and faiths. Earlier this year, a large, new shower trailer generously delivered and set-up by Komfort Zone, was added to the outreach, creating many more options for residents than simply a shower. The portable facility allows three participants to enter an individualized, private bathroom space to shower, use the restroom, and conduct other daily hygiene practices.

Summer Faerman, director of Tzedakah, Learning, and Chesed for B’nai Torah Congregation, said that TLC recognizes the need for people to maintain their dignity no matter their situation.

“Cleanliness is next to godliness. Having the ability to take a shower in private and care for yourself with support from your community is priceless,” Summer said.  “The shower trailer allows the guests also to use the bathroom and spend the time they need. Everyone has been more than appreciative.”

Here are a few comments from those who benefit from the Community Shower:

  • “Thank you for granting me this shower for my job interview. I GOT THE JOB!” –Richard, 51
  • “This is the first shower I’ve had in nine days, and your smile means the world to me.” — Sherri, 49
  • “Thank you for my wonderful shower. May I please keep the washcloth?” — Gerry, 68
  • “Thank you for this blessing and for not judging us.” — Tom, 41
  • “Your compassion and empathy show that you are godly people.”– Josh, 22

Congregation B’nai Torah has been spreading the word about this newest service by advertising through Meals with Meaning, Boca Helping Hands, Changing Lives, the police, flyers at bus stops, and via local business owners in East Boca.

Those who wish to assist unhoused residents who need access to The Community Shower, can provide new towels, washcloths, personal hygiene supplies and a loving, no-judgment zone. For more information or to drop off supplies, contact Summer Faerman at 561-392-8566, extension 340.
