We Stand with New Zealand Against Religious Hatred

We at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County are horrified and outraged by the horrific attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Forty-nine innocent Muslim worshipers have been murdered and others gravely injured at Friday prayers. Both mosques and synagogues are now shuttered across New Zealand. No person should ever have to fear for safety in their sacred space.

As Jews, we know all too well the depths to which extremism, hatred and xenophobia can plummet. This massacre is a horrendous acceleration in targeting houses of worship amid the alarming rise of intolerance around the world.

We join with individuals and communities of conscience across the globe in grief and in condemnation. We mourn the loss of yet more innocent lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with those bereaved and injured, as well as all affected by this tragedy. We implore our leaders to implement sufficient safeguards, and to join in unequivocally condemning this intolerable bloodshed as it threatens freedom and civil society overall.

B'shalom,
