Sandler Family Major Gifts Event to Feature Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Honor Toby and Leon Cooperman

An elegant evening of inspiration is planned for hundreds of prominent Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County donors at this year’s Sandler Family Major Gifts Event. They’ll gather at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at The Polo Club in Boca Raton for a cocktail reception, dinner and an exciting keynote address from The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., Former Prime Minister of Canada.

Celebrating major donors to the Federation’s 2017 Annual Campaign, the longstanding premier event in local Jewish philanthropy is named for Phyllis & Harvey Sandler and family. This year, it will be aptly held on “Giving Tuesday, the Global Day of Philanthropy.”

Toby and Leon Cooperman will be the evening’s honorees, in recognition of their transformative vision and generosity on behalf of the local Jewish community and the Jewish people.

“We are honored to offer our vital major donors this rare opportunity to hear Prime Minister Stephen Harper in his first appearance at a U.S. Federation,” said Jill Rose, who is co-chairing the event with her husband, Michael, and with Ellie and Martin Lifton.

“In Canadian policy and on the world stage, he has been an unwavering supporter and tremendous advocate of Israel,” added Michael Rose. “We are eager to learn from the three-term prime minister’s experience and perspective.”

“Our Federation could not possibly accomplish what we do to meet the rising essential human needs in this community, in Israel and beyond without the overwhelming compassion, generosity and leadership of our stalwart champions – our major donors,” said Ellie Lifton.

“They understand that leaders must lead and draw others into our sacred philanthropy,” added Martin Lifton. “We look forward to a wide audience with adults of all ages from throughout the community.”

The $135 couvert includes valet parking. Cocktail attire is requested and dietary laws will be observed. A minimum $10,000 household gift to the 2017 UJA/Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Annual Campaign is required to attend. For adult children and grandchildren of Federation’s major donors attending through the L’Dor V’Dor initiative, only the couvert is required. The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C.

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper served as Canada’s 22nd Prime Minister from 2006 to 2015. Prime Minister Harper created the modern Conservative Party of Canada, won three successive national elections, in 2006, 2008, and 2011 and was the longest serving Conservative Prime Minister since the country’s founding Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.

Under Prime Minister Harper’s leadership, Canada implemented a clear and principled foreign policy, contributed to international peace and security efforts in Afghanistan, Libya, and Iraq, and stood staunchly by besieged allies Israel and Ukraine. Prime Minister Harper is an unwavering supporter of the State of Israel’s right to exist. He was the first Canadian Prime Minister to address the Knesset, where he decried the international community’s moral relativism towards the State of Israel and famously declared “through fire and water, Canada will stand with you.”

A strong advocate for free trade and open markets, Prime Minister Harper oversaw historic trade negotiations to dramatically expand Canada’s commercial relationships including the conclusion of the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement, the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, the Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, a modernized Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, and Canada’s entrance into the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Prime Minister Harper resides in Calgary where he is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Harper & Associates, a global consulting firm. He and his wife Laureen have two children, Benjamin and Rachel.
