Sam Iselin Celebrates 102nd Birthday at Sinai Residences of Boca Raton
As new neighbors began moving into Sinai Residences of Boca Raton on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus, a true highlight of the early weeks was the joyous 102nd birthday celebration for Sam Iselin. Sam and Beverly, his wife of 46 years, were joined by about 75 friends old and new, from far and near, along with Sinai residents and staff. Together, they enjoyed music and great conversation, drinks and elegant hot hors d’oeuvres catered by the Sinai Executive Chef and, of course, a huge, delicious cake full of candles.
It was clear that when Sam and Beverly make their move to their independent living apartment at Sinai Residences shortly, they won’t be strangers. In addition to the new friends they’re meeting, they’ll be joining a number of neighbors from Boca Lago, including Sam’s best friend, Irv Weiner, who lived next door to them for over 30 years. Though Sam recently gave up golf, the couple will keep up their regular exercise (Beverly enjoys Zumba). And Sam will continue to drive his car day and night, and volunteer weekly at both the Boca Raton Police Department and the West Boca Branch Library.
The party was held on February 11, with more celebrations planned for Sam’s birthday the following day. Kicking off the birthday ceremony, Sinai’s Executive Director, Chris Newport, offered the warmest of greetings to the “first official social gathering since we began welcoming our residents.”
Matthew C. Levin, Federation President & CEO, and a member of the Federation-affiliated board that oversees Sinai Residences, welcomed everyone to the Federation campus. “We built this for your birthday,” he joshed to Sam, who will be, for now, Sinai’s oldest resident. “But seriously, we are so glad to be with all of you celebrating here, in the very best place to be happy and healthy, active and enjoying life.”
Before Sam cut his cake, Levin read several birthday tributes from county, state and federal government officials who serve the area.
“I can only imagine all you have experienced and the wonderful stories that you could tell. We would all be blessed to live such a long, fulfilling life as you have,” wrote Member of Congress Ted Deutch, who is also entering an official congressional record commemorating Sam’s 102nd birthday.
State Senator Joseph Abruzzo sent his birthday greetings and, from the office of State Representative Kevin Rader, Teresa Hadjipetrou delivered a letter in person and joined the fun.
“You are a remarkable person, not only for achieving an age that many do not, but for living your life to the fullest,” wrote Mayor Mary Lou Berger, Palm Beach Commissioner. “Your zest for life is visibly seen through your volunteerism and your active lifestyle. My fondest wishes to you as you celebrate this most significant event and as you enter in to your next chapter of moving into Sinai Residences.”
