Mitzvah Society Event Honors Elyssa Kupferberg and Irving Eckhardt

Nearly 200 local estate planning professionals and others committed to philanthropic giving enjoyed a cocktail reception and dinner at Woodfield Country Club on April 18 to honor their own. Thanks to the collaboration of Mark Schaum, Sid Savelle and Elyssa Kupferberg, they also celebrated the newly renamed Irving Eckhardt Mitzvah Society, recognizing the local resident whose estate left the largest unrestricted gift ever received by the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation to date.

The members of the Foundation’s Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) and others paid particular tribute to a woman who goes above and beyond in her philanthropic efforts for the future of our Jewish community and our people. They lauded Elyssa Kupferberg as the 2016 Mitzvah Society honoree, for her longtime efforts to foster planned giving to the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, and to educate and inspire other professionals to do the same. Her work has helped bring new people to the world of Jewish philanthropy.

“Elyssa is a tireless, highly skilled professional who has clearly demonstrated a powerful desire to ensure the future well-being and security of our community and our people,” said JJCF Chair Richard Steinberg. “An endowed Lion of Judah herself, she has introduced many wealth management clients to planned giving and has inspired and mentored numerous estate planning professionals to do the same.”

Matthew C. Levin, Federation President & CEO, reflected on Mr. Eckhardt’s vision and generosity: “With the largest unrestricted gift ever received by the JJCF, Mr. Eckhardt, who passed away at 91 late in 2014, left a way for the community to remember him forever— by creating a lasting Jewish legacy. Now and far into the future, his great vision and generosity will further Jewish interests and benefit so many Jewish people who will never know this modest man.”

Co-chaired by Marjorie A. Horwin and David Pratt, the event also welcomed the newest members of the Irving Eckhardt Mitzvah Society, William C. Miller, Sid Savelle and Michael J. Shapiro.

For twelve years, the Mitzvah Society has recognized estate professionals who have been instrumental in assisting their clients to make planned gifts to the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF). The JJCF develops permanent resources to assure the continuity of Jewish life, programs and services here, in Israel and throughout the world.
