Jewish Federation & JCRC of South PBC Call for Further Action on Spanish River High School Principal Holocaust Comments

We at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and its Jewish Community Relations Council call upon the School District of Palm Beach County Superintendent and Board to take further action against former Spanish River High School principal, William Latson.

We fully reject Mr. Latson’s assertion of his victimization by a false statement. His own egregious written correspondence regarding the Holocaust clearly contradicts this claim. There must be zero tolerance in our educational system for the dangerously misinformed views expressed by Mr. Latson, as well as his validation of Holocaust deniers. His recent reassignment is simply not sufficient.

We also urge the District leadership to investigate why sanctions were not administered for an entire year, toward ensuring that such a mistake will never again happen in our community’s public schools.

We further urge a District-wide review of how Florida’s state-mandated Holocaust Education requirement is being implemented throughout Palm Beach County.

Our Federation, Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services and our other partner agencies are this area’s largest providers of Holocaust programs and services. These include care for our community’s large population of survivors as well as educational opportunities including the March of the Living. This trip to Poland and Israel includes a high proportion of Spanish River High School students every spring.

We will continue our efforts to ensure that the history of the Holocaust as well as its critical lessons are imparted throughout this community. “Never again” must be more than a slogan.
