Each year, our March of the Living takes more than 80 local high school students from the depths of the Holocaust in Poland, to the jubilance of the modern State of Israel. And every year, our group carries a Torah scroll throughout their journey, including on the March from the Auschwitz to Birkenau camps with more than 10,000 peers from throughout the world. But, on this year’s trip, the Torah they carry was recently rescued after being stolen by Nazis 70 years ago. And the students will also experience the completion of its restoration and ceremonial return to use in Poland. A ceremony at 2:30 p.m. in the Entin Holocaust Pavilion on the Federation campus on January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, will announce this project as well as opportunities for others to participate locally in restoring Holocaust Torahs.

We join with Jewish communities and individuals throughout the civilized world in horror and outrage at Friday’s deadly terror attacks in Paris. Once again, we unite in grief, pray for the injured, we express our heartfelt support for those traumatized, and we urge international efforts to ensure security and confront terrorism. Our people in Israel and in the Diaspora are all too familiar with the threats of extremism to civil societies, and the ongoing consequences of such brutal attacks.

We vary by neighborhood and observance, and we span multiple generations. Our group includes representatives from all out day schools and on-campus agencies, rabbis of different denominations. Some of us are first-time visitors, and some have been to Israel a dozen times or more. As a community and as individuals, we have come together in strength and solidarity as we often do, to stand with our Jewish family at another pivotal point in Israel’s history.
