Looking Back on an Epic Year and Envisioning Our Future

Looking Back on an Epic Year and Envisioning Our Future

This week, we celebrated our many accomplishments and thanked our leaders at the 2013 Annual Meeting. From the red carpet entrance til the final curtain call, the sense of pride and partnership among 250 passionate, committed community leaders and donors was a true testament to “An Epic Year.” It left no doubt that we are indeed building a stronger community to care for each other. Roxane and Michael Lipton chaired a movie-themed evening of warmth, joy and optimism that will resound for a long time, as it set the stage for the coming year. Four of our brightest stars received significant awards. It was my honor and privilege to present the following vision for our community – a vision that resonates far beyond the people in the room that night, encompassing all our community and, especially, the thousands of people you help feed, protect, teach, inspire, save and comfort every day, everywhere.

Reflections from Jerusalem

Reflections from Jerusalem

This week, I’m writing from Jerusalem, on a Mission with 25 members of our Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation’s Professional Advisory Committee. Even after a couple dozen visits to Israel, I’m overwhelmed like a first-timer at the miracle of this young, yet age-old country. As we explore together, it’s a privilege and a joy to watch our actual first-timers form their connections to the people and the land. Raised in different communities, from an array of Jewish backgrounds, our feeling of unity in our homeland is something we will never forget. Here is yet another sign that our community’s future is bright, with seasoned and aspiring leaders taking time to see the fruits of our labors in Israel, and ready to strengthen our powerful bonds here.

Never Again

Apr 12, 2013

Never Again

We’ve heard it loud and clear in epic events like the Adolph Eichmann capture, the Entebbe hostage rescue, the destruction of Iraq’s nuclear reactor. We hear it when our community ensures that new generations will keep alive the memories and lessons of the Holocaust, and when our survivors courageously share their stories. But it’s up to each of us to see that Never Again is embedded throughout Jewish life. Protecting, sustaining and furthering the well-being, strength and ruach of our Jewish people is nothing less than our own powerful battle cry.

"Eshet Chayil," the Women of Valor Around Us

Next week, I’ll be headed to New York City with 65 of our community’s brightest, most caring and dedicated women. So you might be surprised to learn just how at home I am as the only man among the largest delegation (outside the NYC area) to the biennial International Lion of Judah Conference (ILOJC) – unless you’ve met my mother or my wife. And the accomplished women in my family are hardly an exception. Throughout Jewish and secular life, and at the very core of our Federation, we are beholden to Jewish women for their vision and contributions.

A New Year, a New Generation

A New Year, a New Generation

This week, my work began with joy and ruach at my first visit to Torah Academy of Boca Raton. Our Jewish community is blessed with four vibrant, diverse (Federation beneficiary) day schools that provide outstanding preparation for Jewish life, as well as a wealth of other opportunities for high quality Jewish education and experiences. It’s no wonder that menchlichkeit abounds here. Yet, it is upon us as a community to extend - to far more Jewish families - these opportunities that will enrich their lives as they secure our Jewish future.

Disagreement Without Dislike: A Light Unto Our Community

Especially at election season and on topics that arouse our deepest passions as caring Jews, respectful discourse is essential to our strength and well-being as a community and as a people. Diversity of opinion is a cornerstone of Jewish tradition, and the need for civility in our Jewish community goes far beyond elections and public discourse. To fulfill our essential communal responsibility to take care of our people, it is upon us – as institutions and as individuals - to learn to live together in a more genteel manner. Let each of us be a light unto this community.

Home Is Where the Heart Is: On Our Campus

As I settle into my new home at Federation with a fresh perspective, I keep finding myself in awe as I arrive each day on our truly astounding Jewish campus. At 100 acres with 300,000 square feet of building space, our Richard and Carole Siemens Jewish Campus west of the City of Boca Raton is the largest in the country. At the heart of our Jewish community, our Federation campus is home to dozens of programs and services, schools and residential facilities that care for and educate thousands throughout the lifespan.

Be Part of Our Caring Jewish Community: "Like" Us on Facebook

This week, we saw the conclusion of the 2012 Olympics in London. While symbolizing the ideal of international cooperation, harmony and human dignity, these Games represented the 40th anniversary of the massacre of 11 Israeli team members in Munich. While the International Olympic Committee unconscionably refused to commemorate this horrific moment in Olympic history, athletes from France, Italy, the United States and other nations bravely stood up for these victims of terror. With support from members of the media and many world leaders, and a petition signed by more than 100,000 people, the Munich 11 indisputably did return to the forefront of global consciousness. We are reminded once again how terrorism remains a threat to peace-loving people everywhere.
