Thousands Unite in South PBC for 2nd Community-Wide Purim Carnival

Nearly three thousand people from all across the local Jewish community had an incredible time together on the afternoon of Sunday, March 10, at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus in West Boca. Joyous, colorful Purim Carnivals have always been part of the community’s holiday celebrations. But for South Palm Beach County, something exceptional happened for a second year as local Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Chabad synagogues and organizations again joined forces to create something far bigger and more exciting for everyone.

$100,000 in Grants to Local and Israeli Projects Announced by Local Jewish Women’s Foundation at Reception

The Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF) of South Palm Beach County hosted its sixteenth annual Granting Wishes Cocktail Reception on March 12 at Boca Rio Golf Club. More than 160 guests from across the Jewish community were the first to learn about JWF’s $100,000 in 2019 grant awards to organizations in the local community and in Israel. The guests also heard from noted educator, businesswoman and social entrepreneur, Barbara Greenspan Shaiman. They honored Alice Kemper for her extraordinary five years of strategic leadership as JWF Chair, and welcomed Randee Rubenstein as rising Chair.

We Stand with New Zealand Against Religious Hatred

We at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County are horrified and outraged by the horrific attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Forty-nine innocent Muslim worshipers have been murdered and others gravely injured at Friday prayers. Both mosques and synagogues are now shuttered across New Zealand. No person should ever have to fear for safety in their sacred space.

ONE DAY for All: Super Sunday, Volunteer Projects & Chocolate Family Seders

April 7 will be a most important ONE DAY for the Jewish community, with three great ways to get everyone involved through the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County! Every spring, Federation has a Super Sunday phone-a-thon where volunteers make calls to those living in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Highland Beach. This year, Federation has added Jewish Community in Action hands-on volunteer projects at local service organizations and two Chocolate Seder Pre-Passover Family Experiences.

South Palm Beach Delegation Heads to DC for Jewish Disability Advocacy Day

A committed delegation from South Palm Beach County and Broward joined hundreds of diverse Jewish advocates from across the country in Washington DC on February 26, 2019 to participate in Jewish Disability Advocacy Day (JDAD). The annual JDAD gathering on Capitol Hill is an important opportunity for advocates to learn from public policy experts, hear from members of Congress, and meet with their local representatives in support of timely pieces of legislation affecting people with disabilities.

With profound sadness and the deepest respect we share with you news of the passing of William “Bill” Newman on Sunday, February 24, at the age of 92. The son of Ukrainian and Russian immigrants, Bill became a towering figure in real estate and in philanthropy, including his overwhelming generosity to the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

Amid premium networking, business leaders and professionals will hear from Marla Schaefer, the former Co-CEO and Co-Chair of the Board of Claire's Stores, Inc., the largest accessory retailer in the world, which she sold to private equity in 2007. Schaefer will keynote the season’s second Lewis Katz Industry Icon Series event on Thursday evening, March 14, 2019 at the Federation. Networking will begin at 6:00 pm over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres (dietary laws observed), and the program will start at 6:30 pm.

About 430 of the community’s most compassionate, generous women came together on February 6 for our Federation’s annual Lion of Judah Luncheon. The roar from the ingathering at The Polo Club resounded throughout the community and across the globe where, every day, our Lions’ efforts are saving lives and strengthening Jewish life. Chaired by Diane Feldman and Barbara Werner, the inspiring, elegant gathering was headlined by Jodi Kantor, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and best-selling author whose work helped spark the #MeToo movement.

Every year around the world, joyous, colorful Purim Carnivals are part of this holiday’s lively celebrations. South Palm Beach County has been no exception, with carnivals held by many individual synagogues. Now, for a second year, an array of local synagogues and other Jewish organizations have joined forces to create something bigger and more exciting for everyone! School may have been out but PJ Library® was most certainly in session! More than 400 children, parents and grandparents gathered together on Tu B’Shevat. Monday, January 21 for a morning of fun with PJ Library in South Palm Beach County at Bedner’s Farm. The cool, crisp morning included a captivating enactment of the PJ Library story of Tu B’Shevat, Birthday of the Trees from Amy Weissman (Miss Amy), music and dancing with Rock n’ Roll Rabbi David Paskin, a hayride through the farm and even tomato picking!

Baskies, Esq., at the annual Irving Eckhardt Mitzvah Society Cocktail Reception on February 4, 2019. The Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, and the evening’s co-chairs, Tom Katz Esq., and Jerry Wolf, Esq., invite colleagues, friends and others to honor Baskies at the Wyndham Hotel Grand Ballroom in Boca Raton at 5:30 pm for cocktails and dinner (dietary laws observed). Over the past 15 years, the Mitzvah Society has inaugurated 76 professionals who, like Baskies, have guided their clients to establish charitable legacies through the JJCF. New Special Needs Resources: Jewish Abilities Alliance Website and Community Liaison

The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is pleased to introduce the new Jewish Abilities Alliance comprehensive online Resource Guide, and the availability of a Special Needs Community Liaison to provide information to individuals with disabilities, and their families. The Jewish Abilities Alliance at southpalmbeach.jewishabilities.org was created as an integral part of the Federation’s Special Needs Initiative. The JAA is the community’s network that links individuals with disabilities and their families to resources, services, support groups, workshops, clinics and recreational programs within the community. Known as a “one-stop shop for families,” it is easy to navigate as users may filter their searches by ages and needs.

Crafts, games, story time with an acclaimed children’s author, latkes and gelt, a live concert and a giant menorah were in store as PJ Library® in South Palm Beach County lit up the third night of Chanukah at Boca Center. About 1,500 people of all ages from all across the Jewish community joined in the fun, displaying South Palm Beach County’s full vibrant Jewish diversity. Another great opportunity to join in the fun with PJ Library this month will be Bagels with Bubbe and Zayde on Friday, December 28 at the Children’s Museum of Boca Raton. This is a special time – with special PJ books - for children and their grandparents!

More than 350 top Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County supporters gathered at the Polo Club on December 5 to celebrate the impact of their generosity from down the street to across the globe. The evening’s chairs, Lisa and Bob Marton, and Sandra and Howard Needleman, led a program of poignancy and power. Chair Debra Halperin delivered a moving appeal, personally crafted from her years of experience and delivered from her heart. Ambassador Ron Prosor provided enlightening and enjoyable reflections and insights regarding Israel on the world stage. William Newman, Jane & Alan Cornell and Myrna & Norma Ricken were honored for their exemplary philanthropy.

Lay and professional leaders, rabbis and legacy donors from ten South Palm Beach County Jewish agencies, schools, synagogues and Federation gathered for a warm, elegant evening event on October 16, 2018. Together, they celebrated their remarkable individual and collective successes as part of the local Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) program with a reception in Federation’s Zinman Hall. Together the CJL partner groups have raised nearly $74 million in 574 legacy commitments from 433 donors over the past two years for their own and the entire Jewish community’s future.

Limmud Boca – A Diverse Day of Jewish Learning on December 9

For 38 years, Jewish people have been taking part in Limmud days of learning in 84 communities spanning 44 countries and six continents. And now, Limmud, is coming to Boca Raton on Sunday, December 9 with an expansive, day-long array of learning opportunities. From across diverse Jewish South Palm Beach County and beyond, 600 adults of all ages will fill Katz Yeshiva High School’s new facility on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus in West Boca. Together, in the all-inclusive Limmud environment, unaffiliated with any branch of Judaism, they’ll explore Jewish culture, thought and identity in a powerful, upbeat and inspiring celebration of shared learning.
