Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Statement of Concern Regarding Proposed Iran Nuclear Agreement

Last week, we sent a message raising grave concerns and urging the greatest vigilance regarding the proposed nuclear deal announced by the United States, Iran and an array of world powers on July 14, 2015. Now that the agreement’s details have been scrutinized by a diverse group of policy experts, we find our cautions fully affirmed. The agreement falls short in several key areas that are vital to the safety and security of not only our Jewish family in Israel, but to the United States and people around the globe.

While we sincerely respect the sustained and extraordinary efforts of the United States and its allies to put a diplomatic end to Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, we regretfully find ourselves among the large, diverse and growing number of experts and organizations in opposition to the proposed agreement. And we urge others to join us.

There is simply too much at stake.

The Iranian regime, the world’s leading exporter of terrorism, has long made clear its desire to wipe Israel off the map, and provides increasingly sophisticated missile technology to Israel’s enemies. Even in the days since the agreement was announced, a staged public rally featured thousands marching through Tehran chanting "Down with America" and "Death to Israel."

The proposed deal does not curb, and may actually provide additional resources, to fuel Iran’s longstanding aggression toward its neighbors as well as its funding of terror organizations around the world. Lifting sanctions on Iran will provide a quick influx of billions of dollars that can result in a short-term boon for Hamas and Hezbollah. Further, the agreement does not permit “anytime, anywhere” inspections of Iranian facilities. Other areas of concern include weaponization activity, dismantlement of nuclear facilities and duration of vital components in the agreement. In a time of escalating instability in the region, this deal requires a blind trust that the Iranian regime clearly has not earned.

And so, as Jews, as Americans and as passionate supporters of Israel, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment. We acknowledge the diverse views within our own community, but we know this issue must remain above politics. Of course, we can have different ideas about how to achieve the peace and security we all desire, but we cannot be silent in our opposition to an agreement that takes far too many risks with one of the world’s most dangerous regimes.

We encourage you to share your concerns with your U.S. Representatives and Senators, and urge them to join in opposing this deal.
