Young Women Get a “Rise” Out of Challah Baking (May 23, 2016)

About the Event
As part of the new Mind-Body-Spirit Series, a group of young women, including those from the Young Women’s Committee of YAD, met in JARC’s great room to have fun, socialize and learn the meaning behind making and baking challah.

Led by the dynamic Simone Broide, the fun and outgoing group of young women put on their aprons and mixed it up as they learned about the special merits that come from making this bread. Each of the seven ingredients has its own spiritual significance: flour sifts thoughts, speech and actions from impurity; yeast expands mitzvot; sugar sweetens one’s judgments; salt gives “taste” to our thoughts and good deeds; oil softens our words and actions; eggs signify fertility; and water serves as a reminder for life and abundance.

As they let their challah rise, the guests were welcomed by Chair Melissa Rayman. Then, Dana Vizner, Federation’s Vice President of Campaign, Israel and Overseas shared how Federation helps the local and global Jewish community. Fallon Gechter, JARC’s Director of Communications & Marketing shared with everyone how JARC helps those with disabilities operate out in the world thanks to JARC’s stellar training and other programs. Karina Sokolowska from the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) served as guest presenter, telling stories and sharing the JDC’s work on behalf of Jews in need around the world who would otherwise go unnoticed.

After the presentations and a healthy lunch, the dough had risen and the women started their final preparations for the challah, kneading and braiding their loaves so they could take their bounty and new knowledge home to share with friends and family.
