Kids Get Competitive During the PJ Library® Cupcake Wars

About the Event
Chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, pastel-colored frosting, and more than 140 PJ Library kids and parents just waiting to show off their decorating skills--this was the scene for the recent PJ Library® and PJ Our Way™ event.

Starting off with a coloring contest and pizza feast, this year’s event once again featured a “Kids vs. Parents” contest to see who could create cupcake masterpieces. After the ground rules were read by event co-chair, Miriam Klein, everyone dashed off to their assigned table to get to work.

The decorating was done in three rounds, each with a different theme. The overall theme was about the holiday of Shavuot. Just before the themes were announced, Rabbi Josh Broide, Director of the Center for Jewish Engagement of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County gave everyone an overview of Shavuot. The kids and parents had fun answering the questions and gearing up for what they thought were going to be the themes of design.

The first round challenged everyone to decorate based on The Torah and the Ten Commandments; the second round was Foods We Eat on Shavuot; and the third was Shavuot Leads Us into the Summer. We had a great panel of judges from three of our local day schools. Chayim Dimont from Katz Hillel Day School, Rabbi Rafi Draiman from Torah Academy of Boca Raton, and Rabbi Baruch Plotkin from Donna Klein Jewish Academy all enjoyed talking about their school with the kids and parents and enjoyed watching our local day school and public school kids work together as a team.

In the end, the kids beat the parents (of course!) and everyone took their decorated cupcakes home, along with great memories. Thank you to our Co- Chairs, Miriam Klein, Maren Mayer, and Piper Fults for a job well done!

All families living in South Palm Beach County raising Jewish children from six months through eight years old and nine to eleven years are welcome to sign up for PJ Library® and PJ Our Way™ respectively. Families will receive a free high-quality Jewish children’s book every month.
