Jewish Education Ethics Institute Hosts Harvard Expert for Educators and Parents
About the Event
Local educators and parents enjoyed an informative and enlightening evening with Dr. Robert Brooks on Monday, November 2, at the fourth annual Ethics Institute. Dr. Brooks, a clinical psychologist and faculty member at Harvard Medical School, shared his insights on teaching and parenting with an engaged audience at Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Zinman Hall in Boca Raton.
The evening featured two interactive presentations by Dr. Brooks, an international lecturer and author or co-author of 16 books. In “The Power of Mindsets: Creating a Positive School Climate,” he described the mindset of educators who touch both the minds and hearts of students, and shared the life-long impacts that teachers can have on students. He also offered specific strategies for nurturing motivation, learning, hope and resilience in students.
The second session focused on “Raising Resilient and Empowered Children.” Dr. Brooks discussed ways for parents to help children deal effectively with stress and pressure and become resilient to challenges. He stressed that empathy is crucial for understanding and responding to children and explained why some children have a more difficult time developing a positive self-image. The lecture was followed by a lively question-and-answer session.
The Ethics Institute is sponsored by the Department of School Educational Services of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, and the Jack and Harriet Rosenfeld Foundation Program in Jewish Education of the Miami School of Education and Human Development.
