Let’s Talk Super Sunday & Good Deeds Day – April 2 at Federation
On April 2, the phones will ring out once again from the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County throughout the Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Highland Beach areas. “Let’s Talk Super Sunday” offers opportunities for all to be part of what everyone’s talking about: how whenever and wherever our Jewish family needs us, our Federation is there.
And, for a third year, Super Sunday is inviting volunteers not only to make calls, but also to join an upbeat, hands-on helping project as part of the international “Good Deeds Day.” In addition to the hundreds making calls throughout the community, volunteers of all ages will be assembling ingredients into packages for 20,000+ easily prepared kosher meals.
The calling will begin in Zinman Hall on the Federation campus at 9901 Donna Klein Boulevard, Boca Raton in three shifts from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
“Let’s Talk” – what better theme could we have for this year’s Super Sunday – a day of engaging our community in conversation and educating our neighbors on the importance of our Federation’s critical work,” said Hal Klein, who is chairing the event with his wife, Talia. “Super Sunday is our Federation’s single largest fund raising day of the year. It’s individuals, couples, families and groups coming together from across this Jewish community that makes it possible for us to do all the good we do for our Jewish family – from our local neighborhoods to across the world in Israel and wherever we are needed.”
Raffle prizes, breakfast, lunch, snacks and great camaraderie will make the day fun for the volunteers, who are asked to sign up for two-hour shifts. The first Phone-a-thon shift is from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. (breakfast starting at 9:00 a.m.), second shift 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., and third shift 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. The Good Deeds Day food packaging will take place at 2:00 p.m. in the Loewenstern Cafetorium at Katz Hillel Day School of Boca Raton on the Federation campus.
“The 20,000 meals we assemble will help stock the shelves at the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS,” said Super Sunday Chair, Talia Klein. “The Food Pantry is one of the many vital programs supported by our Federation. Join us to help your neighbors feed, protect, teach, inspire, save and comfort so many who need us. Find out why people volunteer again and again every year and – if you can’t join us – be sure to answer the call on April 2. So many people depend on us – and YOU!”
PJ Library® – South Palm Beach County will have special mitzvah projects in the food-packaging room for families with young children, and students in all grades may earn community service hours for participating in any of the day’s volunteer activities.
“Our Good Deeds Day project is another of PJ Library’s many opportunities for families with young children to fulfill a mitzvah for our community,” said local PJ Library Chair Joanna Drowos. “Newcomers as well as seasoned PJ families will enjoy learning hands-on together with others who care. We are also proud that PJ Our WayTM, PJ’s next chapter for readers ages 9-11, is a sponsor of Super Sunday’s Good Deeds Day project. We invite everyone to learn more about PJ Library’s free books, music and more for families raising Jewish children, by visiting jewishboca.org/pjlibrary.”
Now in its eleventh year, Good Deeds Day has grown from 7,000 participants in Israel in 2007 to, in 2016, nearly 1.5 million volunteers in 75 countries taking part in 14,000 projects, and providing more than four million hours of service. More information is available at Good-deeds-day.org.
Super Sunday is generously sponsored by HJ Sims, and The Mordis Group/Merrill Lynch. Atlas Party Rental and Hotwire Communications are the generous In-Kind Sponsors. Everyone is invited to become a Telephone Underwriter at $100 per phone, or a Hunger Hero at $100.
