Vowing, “Never again,” about 500 members of the South Palm Beach County Jewish and Christian communities gathered in solidarity to commemorate the Holocaust at the March of Remembrance on Sunday, April 12, 2015, a few days before Yom HaShoah. A crowd of 250 gathered in the Boca Raton Christian School gymnasium at 3:00 pm. The group walked half a mile along Boca Raton streets to Temple Beth El – proclaiming their purpose enroute with banners held high - for a deeply moving "Interfaith Holocaust Commemorative Remembrance Program."

This Super Sunday, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County not only banked on the Jewish community to once again make and answer hours of Phone-A-Thon calls. In addition to the hundreds of volunteers making calls, they also counted on a couple hundred more to observe the international Good Deeds Day by assembling kosher meal kits. The community clearly came through on both counts, raising $401,089 for the Federation’s Annual Campaign, and putting together 20,786 meal kits for recipients of the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS.

After exploring sports, fine spirits and Cuba as well as philanthropy together this season, our Men’s Division took on a topic of most critical concern for their spring event: “Follow the Money: Who Is Really Funding the Terrorists?” On March 24, men of all ages who care about premium time together as well as helping the community overflowed Chuck and Gail Lichtman’s beautiful Sun & Surf home and patio area in Boca Raton. After connecting over hors d’oeuvres and cocktails by the pool, they got down to serious business with renowned international terrorism financing expert Dr. Jonathan Schanzer, Vice President for Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) and former terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Amid premium networking, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, business leaders and professionals from throughout the area will have the opportunity to hear from Ira Leesfield, former presidential advisor and renowned attorney, on Thursday evening, April 16. Leesfield will headline the next Industry Icon Event for Federation’s B&P Division, wrapping up the current season’s series.

The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is extremely proud to share that on March 23, 2015, the national Jewish Daily Forward newspaper named our community’s own Rabbi Josh Broide to their 2015 list of America’s Most Inspiring American Rabbis/33 Men & Women Who Move Us. Rabbi Broide moved to Boca Raton in 2000 and has served the local Jewish community in a number of professional roles ever since, Rabbi Broide joined the Federation as its first Director of Community Engagement last year.

Vowing, “Never again,” the South Palm Beach County Jewish and Christian communities will walk together in solidarity in commemoration of the Holocaust at the March of Remembrance on Sunday, April 12, 2015, a few days before Yom HaShoah, (Holocaust Memorial Day). Participants will gather at 3:00 pm for brief welcoming remarks in the Boca Raton Christian School’s gymnasium. Hundreds of community members will join Holocaust survivors, their families and their supporters to march together on the streets of Boca Raton, beginning at 3:15 PM. Their destination will be Temple Beth El of Boca Raton for a meaningful Holocaust Remembrance program at 4:00 pm. The march is approximately half a mile; a complimentary return shuttle bus will bring marchers back to the Boca Raton Christian School parking lot following the Yom HaShoah program.

Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County leadership, local Rabbis, project partners, and future residents gathered on March 3 for a traditional “topping off” ceremony for the Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. The event marked a celebration of an almost-finished construction site, an expression of hope for the secure completion of the structure, and a blessing for the building and its more than 450 future inhabitants. All of Sinai Residences’ independent living apartments are fully reserved and a waiting list has begun.

This Super Sunday, our Federation is not only counting on the Jewish community to once again answer the call on March 29. With the theme of “Everyone Counts,” they’re also inviting volunteers to be part of this year’s international “Good Deeds Day” with a hands-on helping project. In addition to hundreds of volunteers making calls throughout the community, they’ll be assembling 20,000 kosher meals to be donated to the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS. And it’s all at the Federation! Volunteers will make calls at three shifts, with a special teen shift, and the meal assembly will take place from 2:00-400 p.m. with volunteers ages 7-107.

Like many of you, I’m sure, one of my favorite times with my family and on our Federation campus is Purim. What a joy to work amid the vibrant costumes, the music, the triumphant story that resonates so well today. Our community, like others around the world, comes alive with spirited megillah readings, carnivals and parades. And now, as they do every year, our thoughts turn to preparing for Passover.

The Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF) of South Palm Beach County invites the community to share their success with a remarkable opportunity to hear Sharon Tal of Maskit – The Israeli Fashion House at their 2015 Granting Wishes Cocktail Reception on Wednesday, March 11at 5:30 p.m. at Boca Rio Golf Club. Both new and prized vintage Maskit fashions will be on display. Guests will also be the first to learn JWF’s 2015 grant awards to programs in our community and in Israel.

We are shocked and outraged following theweekend’s attacks in Copenhagen, the latest horrific report of clearly targeted violence against Jews and Jewish institutions in Europe. Once again, we join our Jewish family in grieving as we call upon world leaders to rise to this challenge with sufficient safeguards and unconditional condemnation.. As always, we remain vigilant with security as our highest priority.

For a third year, our Jewish community came together in all its vibrant diversity with one purpose at THE EVENT: to celebrate all the good we do together and get inspired to do even more for those who depend on us. From our 40 synagogues, Federation partner agencies and schools; from longtime leaders and donors to newcomers; and from multiple generations - a crowd of more than 600 filled the rooms at Boca West Country Club with ruach on February 3. They cried and cheered for Israeli hero Noam Gershony and, with generous underwriting from Joan Garde, they roared with popular performer Larry Miller.

As part of its ongoing advocacy efforts, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County brought our community’s State Senators and State Representatives to Federation’s campus to meet with Jewish community leaders in advance of this year’s legislative session in Tallahassee. They gathered in Zinman Hall for the Legislative Sendoff to learn about new and existing issues and program proposals to address the needs of vulnerable residents of Boca Raton and Delray Beach. More than fifty individuals attended the reception and program, including legislators and their staff members, federal government officials, professionals from the Israeli Consulate, local rabbis, and leaders of the JCRC, the Federation and its beneficiary agencies.

Local estate planning professionals committed to philanthropic giving and the future of the Jewish community will once again honor their own at the Mitzvah Society Cocktail Reception at 6:00 pm, Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at St. Andrews Country Club in Boca Raton. The Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, and event Co-Chairs Elyssa Kupferberg and Marjorie Horwin invite colleagues, friends and others to join them in paying tribute to 2015 Mitzvah Society Honoree M. Adam Bankier. For eleven years, the Mitzvah Society has recognized estate professionals who have been instrumental in leading their clients to make planned gifts to the JJCF through the vehicles most appropriate to their particular circumstances. The JJCF develops permanent resources to assure the continuity of Jewish life, programs and services here, in Israel and throughout the world.

The “pride” of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County gathered again to rededicate and celebrate at the most awaited annual event in local women’s philanthropy. The roar from The Polo Club resounded across the globe on January 14, when 350 generous, committed women came together for the Lion of Judah Luncheon. They welcomed new Lions and LOJES and remembered those who had passed during the year yet whose vision and generosity made them Lions Forever. And they listened raptly to two remarkable speakers. JulieSue Goldwasser shared the profound support of her Federation family through her toddler son’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. With humor as well as gravitas, keynote speaker Linor Abargil shared her powerful journey from being crowned Miss Israel and, shortly after a brutal rape, Miss World, to becoming an attorney, anti-rape activist and mother of “three under three.”
