As 2013 draws to an end and our thoughts turn to taxes, it may be time to consider some ways you can build our community and your legacy. Some vehicles you might consider are IRA Rollovers to Charitable Organizations for taxpayers age 70 ½ or older, a Charitable Lead Trust, a Donor Advised Fund, an Endowment Fund, or donation of an insurance policy. The Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation is committed to finding the right vehicle for each individual or family interested in leaving a legacy – with a strong team of dedicated volunteer Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) members and experienced staff to help.

Featuring another powerful, poignant Holocaust-related film, the 12th annual Kristallnacht Film Forum (KFF) will observe the “Night of Broken Glass,” raise scholarship funds for teen March of the Living participants, and honor a local family. “No Place on Earth,” a new film in English, tells the story of 38 Ukrainian Jews who survived the Holocaust by hiding from the Nazis deep inside massive caves. The film will be screened on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., in Zinman Hall on the Federation campus. American caver Chris Nicola, who “discovered” the caves and captured this remarkable story, will speak at each viewing, along with survivors of the experience. Between the screenings, a donor reception will honor three generations of the local Kwal family for their support of the March and their service and generosity to the Jewish community and people.

I hope your New Year has been happy and healthy – as it is for our Federation. Our offices, hallways and meetings buzz with vibrant activity as the 2014 season gets underway on the crest of 2013’s increased Annual Campaign and endowments. We’re also reflecting on the 40th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. Though delegitimization efforts have replaced regiments and terror has replaced tanks, Israel faces those same enemies. We in the Diaspora are clearly no less essential to her well-being and security today than we were in 1973, as the Federation system and our international partner agencies continue to gather and quickly distribute vital resources where they were most needed.

Local Young Adult Division leader Bryan Drowos recently returned from Ethiopia and Israel, powerfully moved and inspired by the historic mission. Called “Completing the Journey,” this final mission capped an amazing three-decade campaign by Jewish Federations, the government of Israel, the Jewish Agency and American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee to resettle 90,000 Ethiopian Jews in Israel. Among their amazing experiences, mission participants indeed completed the journey from Ethiopia to Israel alongside 58 olim.

One of the most promising and groundbreaking projects for our Federation is leaping forward, as we recognize the 115th reservation of an independent living residence at Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. This state-of-the-art active retirement community will soon bring a vibrant, fulfilling lifestyle for seniors – right here on our Federation’s north campus. Occupying 22 acres with 650,000 square foot of beautifully appointed and landscaped living space, the area’s newest retirement community is a true innovation that will help meet our community’s significant need for quality senior living while generating revenue to support our Federation’s vital mission.

A public plea from the novelist Alice Walker urging Alicia Keys to cancel a concert in Israel has gone unheeded. Keys joins other stars including Rihanna and Elton John who have performed in Israel despite protests and calls to boycott, while other celebrities including Stephen Hawkings have very publicly canceled plans to travel to the country. But, as the New York Post's editor stated above the following op ed published by the paper on June 19, 2013, ". . . Israel’s consul general here in New York has some words for Walker." Our Federation is familiar with the outstanding "Brand Israel" work of Aharoni through his two presentations on our campus for local and Florida leaders last year.

The nearly 3,000 of you who were at Mizner Park Amphitheater on Sunday, May 19 will need no explanation of why Israel Fest 65 will always stand out as the culminating highlight of my first year at Federation. Amid banners and flags, and a pride that was palpable, was the full vibrant diversity of our Jewish community – all ages and stages of life, all backgrounds, all neighborhoods – together for one purpose: to celebrate the miracles of our homeland’s Statehood and its phenomenal, rapid transformation into a democracy at the cutting edge of technology & science, culture & the arts, humanitarian aid and the environment.

This week, we celebrated our many accomplishments and thanked our leaders at the 2013 Annual Meeting. From the red carpet entrance til the final curtain call, the sense of pride and partnership among 250 passionate, committed community leaders and donors was a true testament to “An Epic Year.” It left no doubt that we are indeed building a stronger community to care for each other. Roxane and Michael Lipton chaired a movie-themed evening of warmth, joy and optimism that will resound for a long time, as it set the stage for the coming year. Four of our brightest stars received significant awards. It was my honor and privilege to present the following vision for our community – a vision that resonates far beyond the people in the room that night, encompassing all our community and, especially, the thousands of people you help feed, protect, teach, inspire, save and comfort every day, everywhere.

This week, I’m writing from Jerusalem, on a Mission with 25 members of our Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation’s Professional Advisory Committee. Even after a couple dozen visits to Israel, I’m overwhelmed like a first-timer at the miracle of this young, yet age-old country. As we explore together, it’s a privilege and a joy to watch our actual first-timers form their connections to the people and the land. Raised in different communities, from an array of Jewish backgrounds, our feeling of unity in our homeland is something we will never forget. Here is yet another sign that our community’s future is bright, with seasoned and aspiring leaders taking time to see the fruits of our labors in Israel, and ready to strengthen our powerful bonds here.

We’ve heard it loud and clear in epic events like the Adolph Eichmann capture, the Entebbe hostage rescue, the destruction of Iraq’s nuclear reactor. We hear it when our community ensures that new generations will keep alive the memories and lessons of the Holocaust, and when our survivors courageously share their stories. But it’s up to each of us to see that Never Again is embedded throughout Jewish life. Protecting, sustaining and furthering the well-being, strength and ruach of our Jewish people is nothing less than our own powerful battle cry.

Melis Feingold also attended from South Palm Beach County.
