Unrest in Ukraine

Although the estimated 300,000 Jewish residents in the capital city of Kiev and throughout Ukraine are not outright targets of violence, it has touched them like everyone else. Some Jews in Kiev live close to the encampments and some of February’s deadliest clashes, and are afraid to leave their houses But Jewish Federations and our partner agencies, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), the Jewish Agency for Israel, and World ORT, are there. Since we’ve supported Jewish life and organizations in Ukraine for decades, we were able to step up when the need for help intensified.

It is also up to us to advocate for government resources and legislation to ensure on behalf of those with special needs who are counting on us.

Looking out, I saw the caring leaders, contributors, volunteers and friends whose generosity and commitment to our people make this Jewish community such a remarkable place to live, give and grow together. Raise Your Voice on Iran as the Season Soars

Like you, I’ve watched closely as national, state and local officials have imposed economic sanctions on Iran, that I believe have succeeded toward bringing the regime to the present negotiating table. I recently joined leaders of four regional Jewish Federations in a letter supporting the bipartisan Nuclear Weapon Free Act that I also believe will increase U.S. leverage; it proposes additional conditional sanctions should Iran violate the interim Joint Plan of Action or fail to reach a final agreement to cease enrichment and dismantle their nuclear program. Meanwhile, here at the Federation, the energy just keeps rising as this incredible philanthropic Jewish community’s season crests.

Federation Mourns Dr. Melvin R. Clayman, JARC Founder and Jewish Community Leader

With great sadness we observe the passing of Dr. Melvin R. Clayman, Founder of Federation’s longstanding beneficiary agency JARC, and a pillar of our Jewish community. Mel passed away on November 29, 2013 and a memorial service was held on December 2. Upon moving to Florida, Mel looked for a program for his son Barry. Finding none, he developed a concept for residential homes for adults with developmental disabilities. The Barry Clayman House opened in 1987, and JARC has gone on to remarkable growth and service. Mel’s vision will continue to help countless families for decades to come. He was a true blessing to our community and will be deeply missed.
