This year, the spark caught early and fast, and our Federation is ablaze with Campaign activity. From Campaign Ignition a couple of weeks ago to last night’s record-breaking Sandler Family Major Gifts Event, it’s clear we’re on fire. We’re building on last season’s $600,000 campaign growth with even more ways to get involved, expanding on last year’s successes while introducing important new initiatives. Now it’s time to tell our stories of giving throughout the community. Because with our Jewish family’s ever-increasing needs before us, we simply must do even more extraordinary things.

With great sadness we observe the passing of Dr. Melvin R. Clayman, Founder of Federation’s longstanding beneficiary agency JARC, and a pillar of our Jewish community. Mel passed away on November 29, 2013 and a memorial service was held on December 2. Upon moving to Florida, Mel looked for a program for his son Barry. Finding none, he developed a concept for residential homes for adults with developmental disabilities. The Barry Clayman House opened in 1987, and JARC has gone on to remarkable growth and service. Mel’s vision will continue to help countless families for decades to come. He was a true blessing to our community and will be deeply missed.

For the past year, we’ve been talking about reaching a new day at Federation – a time when we emerge from the challenges of a fledgling Jewish community and an economic downturn to become a stronger, more cohesive “community builder” – that brings us together to care for each other today as well as tomorrow. That day has come. Our bright future is reflected by our new Vision and Mission statements.

Earlier this month, it was my absolute joy and privilege to travel to Israel for five transformative days with 30 of our Jewish community’s key leaders. From our Federation, our synagogues and our agencies, we returned united in our commitment to create a community in which, from our diversity, we stand as one for Israel, we rise as one to preserve Jewish identity, and together we answer the call to understand and care for each other – at home, in Israel and wherever our Jewish family is in need.

As 2013 draws to an end and our thoughts turn to taxes, it may be time to consider some ways you can build our community and your legacy. Some vehicles you might consider are IRA Rollovers to Charitable Organizations for taxpayers age 70 ½ or older, a Charitable Lead Trust, a Donor Advised Fund, an Endowment Fund, or donation of an insurance policy. The Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation is committed to finding the right vehicle for each individual or family interested in leaving a legacy – with a strong team of dedicated volunteer Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) members and experienced staff to help.

I hope your New Year has been happy and healthy – as it is for our Federation. Our offices, hallways and meetings buzz with vibrant activity as the 2014 season gets underway on the crest of 2013’s increased Annual Campaign and endowments. We’re also reflecting on the 40th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. Though delegitimization efforts have replaced regiments and terror has replaced tanks, Israel faces those same enemies. We in the Diaspora are clearly no less essential to her well-being and security today than we were in 1973, as the Federation system and our international partner agencies continue to gather and quickly distribute vital resources where they were most needed.
