The Federation, our partner agencies and entire community join those in Israel and worldwide in horror, grief and outrage at the murders of the three innocent abducted teen boys. Our thoughts and prayers are with the boys’ families as we issue the strongest possible condemnation of these heinous murders. Our community stands in proud solidarity with the government and people of Israel at the frontline of Jewish security as they stand up to terror and we pray those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.

More than 900 strong packed Monday night’s Bring Back Our Boys rally for our three Israeli sons kidnapped on June 12. Leaders and members from throughout our vibrant, diverse Jewish community rose with one voice in anguish, concern and outrage for this act of terror, and with unwavering support for the State of Israel and our Jewish family there. Now, each of us must call upon government officials to exercise their full leverage and authority to return Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Sha’ar and Naftali Frenkel, and to reduce conditions through which Hamas, a proven organization of terror with a legitimate governing role, can abduct innocent, unarmed teenagers.

With heavy hearts, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County shares in mourning the sudden, tragic passing of Lewis Katz, 72, on Saturday night, May 31. A preeminent icon in business as well as Jewish philanthropy, Katz lost his life with six others in the crash of a small jet in Massachusetts. A friend, major donor to our Federation, Katz maintained a home in Boca Raton. His wisdom, inspiration and generous example will be deeply missed here in South Palm Beach County as in his longtime northern communities.

We are outraged by the shootings at the Brussels Jewish Museum that took place on May 24, and the attack on two young men outside a suburban Paris synagogue just hours later. Our community joins with our Jewish family around the globe as our hearts go out to the families of the four innocents murdered in Brussels and to all those terrorized by yet further acts of violence at Jewish institutions. We condemn these deplorable acts and implore European leaders to engage in intensive strategies to immediately protect the Jewish population and facilities while preventing further incidents.

We recently passed a monumental week that encapsulates our Jewish journey from a stateless people in the horrors of the Holocaust to the miracles of our modern State of Israel. We joined with Christian groups to commemorate the Holocaust, we remembered those lost in hard-won fights for Israel’s independence and security and, with pride and joy, we celebrated the 66th anniversary of the State of Israel with ruach on campus and in a unique community program that displayed Israel’s cutting edge entrepreneurship and technological innovation. But with racism and anti-Semitism on the rise, our work is far from done.

As reports of unrest and violence in portions of the Ukraine continue to escalate, so does concern for the 200,000 members of our Jewish family there. They’ve been subject to an increasing number of incidents, including a synagogue firebombing, the desecration of a Holocaust memorial, the shooting of a Jewish mayor, and the distribution of falsified orders for local Jews to register under threat of deportation or loss of citizenship. Our Federation’s vital overseas partners on the ground have been assured that these anti-Semitic acts are isolated incidents independent of the Ukrainian government or pro-Russian separatists. Amid mounting security fears, disruption and stress, these partners are rising to the challenges as they occur on a daily basis by adapting the delivery and types of services in the area. WE MUST HELP them stand ready to care for and secure our people now and through whatever may come in this volatile region. PLEASE DONATE TO THE UKRAINE ASSISTANCE FUND.

Official-looking documents were recently distributed in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk instructed Jews to “register with the Nationalities Commissioner and pay $50 or lose their citizenship and face deportationFederation’s partner agency in the area has ascertained that the flyers originated neither from the Ukrainian government nor from Donetsk’s pro-Russian separatists led by Denis Pushilin, whose name appeared on the documents. As we remember those lost from this region and others during the Holocaust, unrest in Ukraine continues to escalate, including the shooting of the mayor of the second largest city. We condemn in no uncertain terms the reprehensible flyers and all anti-Semitic acts that call forth such painful reminders from the Shoah and throughout our people's history. We are reminded that we must be ever vigilant to the threats to and needs of our Jewish family around the globe. With our overseas partners already on the ground, we continue to closely monitor the situation in Ukraine as we continue our ongoing humanitarian assistance.

Al Gortz has been intimately involved with our Federation since its very inception in 1979. We proudly present this opportunity to learn about his vigorous, inspiring vision for our Federation as he takes the gavel as Chair of the Board. These remarks were delivered by Al at Come Together, the Federation’s 2014 Annual Meeting on April 8 in Zinman Hall.

With warmth, caring and commitment, this week our Federation’s 2014 Annual Meeting celebrated our many accomplishments, paid well-earned tribute to our leaders and, with clarity and confidence, turned the page to our next chapter. Right through to the live band’s final strains of “All You Need is Love,” 280 of our passionate, dedicated community leaders and donors epitomized the night’s lyrical theme of “Come Together.” In a night to remember, we lauded my inestimable partner Ellen R. Sarnoff for her three remarkable years as Chair, and welcomed Al Gortz, to whom the gavel has been passed.
