Calling All Volunteers for Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day A Day Filled with Giving Back for All Ages

Hundreds of volunteers of all ages from throughout South Palm Beach County’s Jewish community will fan out across the area on January 15, 2018 to make a difference for those in need. They’ll be participating in 27 diverse hands-on projects at the second annual Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day.

“Whether they’re interested in preparing food for the hungry, wrapping gifts, gardening, playing games with children or seniors, or much more, they’ll be surrounded by the inspiration and energy of joining their Jewish neighbors to help their less fortunate neighbors,” said Rabbi Josh Broide, Director of the Deborah and Larry D. Silver Center for Jewish Engagement of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, which is presenting the event for a second year. “And this year, we are excited to provide these opportunities for service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.”

Everyone is welcome to participate in one or more volunteer opportunities as individuals, as a family or with friends. The quick and easy required online registration and a full list of projects are available at jewishboca.org/action. The registration fee of $18 per person or per family includes Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day t-shirts for all participants. Community Service hours are offered for students.

Families with young children may especially enjoy “Do a Mitzvah” with PJ Library® in South Palm Beach County at Bedner’s Farm in Boynton Beach, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Bringing along new pajamas and books for children in need, the families will enjoy story time, strawberry picking, hayrides and more.

This year, the daylong event is dedicated in loving memory of Dr. Yoram Dahav, who inspired generations of students to pursue tikkun olam throughout their lives.

Helena Levine, Head of School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy where Dahav most recently taught, remembered him: “Our community was blessed to have a tzadik in our midst. Dr. Dahav had an impact on everyone fortunate to know him as he exemplified everything our community stands for and everything we wish for in our community. It is fitting that we remember and honor him during Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day. Dr. Dahav leaves a legacy for generations of students and families. May his memory be a blessing.”

As projects open to all volunteers take place across the community on January 15, students will engage in helping activities at all six South Palm Beach County Jewish day schools: Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Hadar High School for Girls, Katz Hillel Day School, Katz Yeshiva High School, Torah Academy and Yeshiva Tiferes Torah.

“South Palm Beach County has become synonymous with Jewish Unity, regularly coming together from all across this vibrant, diverse Jewish community,” said Rabbi Broide. “With Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day, we take UNITY to a whole new level by reaching out far into our area and seeing how much of a difference we can make together on one special day.”

Registration is required at jewishboca.org/action. For more information about Jewish CommUNITY Day, the public is invited to contact 561.558.2112 or MichelleAr@bocafed.org.
