Free to Jewish Families: Start the Jewish New Year with New Books and Celebrate in a Giant Sukkah with PJ Library®
A free, high quality children’s book mailed to your home every month may sound too good to be true. But families raising Jewish children ages six months through eleven years in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Highland Beach have gotten quite used it – and there’s room for more to sign up for PJ Library® and PJ Our Way™.
Families are also invited to join a lively, free Family Sukkot Celebration. The event will take place, RAIN OR SHINE, on Sunday, October 16, 2016 from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. PJ Library in South Palm Beach County and the Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center have planned a fun-filled time in a huge sukkah in the Cypress Preserve on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus. Families will enjoy PJ Library Story Time, Singin’ with Miss Susan, arts and crafts, games and sports, and kosher snacks. Of course, they’ll shake the lulav in the sukkah with Levis JCC Board Member, Rabbi David Baum.
There is no charge to attend the Family Sukkot Celebration, but pre-registration is required at jewishboca.org/PJSukkah. Guests should bring a current driver’s license for entrance to the campus.
“We’re thrilled to offer families an array of free activities to celebrate the holiday, with something for everyone,” said Joanna Drowos, local PJ Library Chair. “Last year, nearly 5,000 children, parents and grandchildren enjoyed PJ activities all around South Palm Beach County - at local synagogues, libraries, parks, performances, shops, gyms and more. We’re looking ahead to another year of bringing families together from across the Jewish community to celebrate; learn about holidays; hear stories read by clergy, educators and local personalities; enjoy, nosh, do arts & crafts and engage in mitzvot, hands-on helping activities.”
“Of course, if they aren’t yet receiving PJ Library deliveries, local families raising Jewish children can start the New Year with new books by signing up to join the nearly 1,800 families in South Palm Beach County who enjoy this monthly treat,” said Elana Ostroff, PJ Library in South Palm Beach County Director. “While they can sign up at the sukkah, it takes only a few minutes to register online.”
Families with Jewish children ages six months to eight years can sign up for PJ Library’s free, seasonal and age-appropriate monthly gifts of books and (once a year) a music CD, at jewishboca.org/pjlibrary. Those with children ages nine to eleven are encouraged to sign up for PJ our Way at pjourway.org.
“We’ve been thrilled to recently expand our programming to include nine to eleven-year-olds through PJ Our Way,” said Ostroff. “There are already 250 local tweens engaged in this new pilot program. They select from four available books each month and participate in an online young Jewish readers’ community on a safe website moderated by PJ Our Way educators.”
“My three children look forward to their gifts from PJ Library every month, said Layne Bilu of Boca Raton, mother to Noah, 11; Sophia, 10; and Ari, 8. The younger ones know that each book will bring a wonderful story that we can read and enjoy together while learning about our holidays, traditions, mitzvot, feeling so connected to Jewish life. We were so happy when PJ Our Way began; our oldest loves selecting his own books and we love to see him engaging in Jewish learning with such excitement.”
“And we’re excited to introduce the latest PJ Library programming for parents,” added Drowos. “Our first Mom’s Night Out offers a great opportunity to create a beautiful flower arrangement just in time for the High Holidays, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Young Adult Division and the Jewish Women’s Foundation.”
Mom’s Night Out will take place on Tuesday evening, September 27, 2016, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Field of Flowers, 8177 Glades Road in Boca Raton. A $36 couvert includes all materials, and wine and cheese with dietary laws observed. RSVP is necessary at jewishboca.org/moms by September 20, and space is limited.
