JWF Trustees determine their grantees together, through a collaborative, highly selective eight-month process. This year, JWF’s forward-thinking, hands-on philanthropists reviewed 59 proposals before awarding $100,000 to eleven non-profit programs that change the lives of Jewish women and children locally and internationally. These dollars are all donations from the JWF donors, called Trustees, who contribute a minimum of $2,000 per year for five years.

In its thirteen years, our local JWF has now awarded more than $1 million to fund programs that increase Jewish women’s and children’s abilities, education and independence locally and globally, in categories including education, health and abuse prevention and economic security.

JWF’s 2016 grants were awarded to four local programs: PJ LIBRARY®/PJ Our Way; MARCH OF THE LIVING/From March to Miriam; JARC FLORDA/Employ JARC; and HILLEL OF BROWARD AND PALM BEACH/JEWELL.

Five programs in Israel also received grants: CENTER FOR WOMEN’S JUSTICE-Skill Building and Outreach for Civil Action Against GET Abuse; JBKATIF/Achotenu: Ethiopian Nurses Bridge Program; MACHASHAVA TOVA/App Development for Girls; KOL ISRAEL HAVERIM/Cracking the Glass Ceiling – Working Toward Significant Military or National Service for Girls in Science; HADASSAH/From Addis Ababa to Jerusalem Family Shabbaton.

Then, Marci Shimoff kept the audience laughing, crying, wide-eyed and thoroughly engaged as she took on the “unhappiness epidemic.” The woman's face of the biggest self-help book phenomenon in history, Chicken Soup for the Soul, and a renowned presenter, Shimoff shared insights into the “code of happiness” and the power of habits, debunked myths and gave practical advice. She also led the women in individual and interactive exercises toward self-knowledge and changing patterns. Following her presentation, Shimoff signed copies of her book, Happy for No Reason, for appreciative guests.
